Four short reflections on Padraic X. Scanlan’s prize-winning Freedom’s Debtors: British Antislavery in Sierra Leone in the Age of Revolution, stemming from a Roundtable Discussion at the Canadian Historical Association’s Annual Conference in 2019.

The panel explores the intersections of the history of British antislavery with other histories of progressive and working-class politics in Britain at the turn of the nineteenth century. It also reflects on the distinctions between ‘antislavery’ and ‘abolitionism’ in British history and historiography.
