Biographical note
Nicole Gastonguay is a graphic designer and textile artist living and working in New York City with familial roots in Quebec. She crochets and needlepoints all sorts of pop and vernacular objects inspired by the retro and the edible.
Her work has been featured in exhibitions in New York and Los Angeles, in the books Juxtapoz Handmade by Juxtapoz Art and Culture Magazine, Gingko Press Inc (2010) and Tangible: High Touch Visuals edited by R. Klanten, S. Ehmann, and M. Hubner, Gestalten Berlin (2009), and her Rubik's cube tissue box is a permanent part of the set of CBS’s Big Bang Theory.
Gastonguay’s Canadian origins help lay the foundations for her turn to textiles. Her great-grandparents were born in the Montreal area and only moved to Rhode Island at the end of the nineteenth century, lured by job prospects in the lace mills. Years later Gastonguay uses crochet and needlepoint to recast everyday objects and thereby reinvent them.
