On Collaborative Translation and Subjectivity in the Humanities. A Conversation with The Henri Meschonnic Reader’s Translator Team

Abstract

The publication of The Henri Meschonnic Reader finally offers English-speaking readers the opportunity to engage with Henri Meschonnic’s theoretical work in a coherent way. To realize this project, a team of six translator-scholars from the fields of linguistics, poetics, literary and translation studies worked together. The interview follows the Meschonnician idea that translating is an activity that transforms the translator’s subjectivity and examines its implications in the context of collaborative translation and (re)translation in the humanities. Looking back on their experience of working together, the translators reflect on how putting into practice the ethics of translation, defined by Meschonnic as “translating what the text does rather than what it says,” involves a conception of language as an activity, thereby challenging our understanding of the humanities and our systems of knowledge.

Résumé

La publication du Henri Meschonnic Reader permet enfin au public anglophone d’appréhender les écrits théoriques de Henri Meschonnic d’une manière cohérente. Pour mener à bien ce projet, une équipe de six traducteurs-chercheurs issus des domaines de la linguistique, de la poétique, de la littérature et de la traductologie a travaillé ensemble. L’entretien reprend l’idée de Meschonnic selon laquelle la traduction est une activité qui transforme la subjectivité du traducteur, et examine quelles en sont les implications dans le contexte de la traduction collaborative et de la (re)traduction dans les sciences humaines. Revenant sur leur expérience de travail collaboratif, les traducteurs nous font apercevoir que mettre en pratique l’éthique de la traduction définie par Meschonnic comme “traduire ce que le texte fait plutôt que ce qu’il dit” implique une conception du langage en tant qu’activité et, au-delà, amène à questionner notre compréhension des sciences humaines et nos systèmes de savoir.
