Following Erving Goffman's suggestion that "markers and regulators" run across any "strip of discourse" forming a "track" to regulate focus, the paper discusses frames-both in scene and language-that demarcate icons of gender. Set, deixis and the semiotic segmentation of text control the audience's reception, both to establish traditional images of the male and female (and of sexual relationships) and to deconstruct these images. The result is to build scenography which urges the consideration of gender issues-indeed, to make set, acting technique and costume synecdochal-so that theatrical frames not only contain action but themselves become part of the cultural coding of gender and power. In this context, costume, tears, dreams, movement and language become keys to definition and, when employed to resist or subvert, become overt or coterie signs of redefinition.

Dans le présent article, l'auteur examine les paramètres qui délimitent les représentations du genre, tant du point de vue de la scène que de la langue. Thomas Pope Besnard (T.P.B.) appeared from nowhere as the driving force behind the Lyceum Theatre and the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Toronto between 1846 and 1852; he then disappeared completely from the scene. The mystery man of nineteenth century Ontario theatre history, T.P.B. has occasioned much romantic speculation over the years. This paper removes the mystery, and details Besnard's prosaic life.

This essay examines the structural and representational strategies employed by Michel Marc Bouchard in Lilies, or the Revival of a Romantic Drama to effect a transformation of the traditional images of homosexuality in the contemporary theatre. At the centre of the play is a love affair between two young men in the rural and oppressive environment of Roberval in 1912; a complex metatheatrical structure, incorporating numerous mises en abyme surrounds this nucleus and facilitates an exploration of problems which relate directly and indirectly to its expression of adolescent passion. Within this structure, Bouchard, like his characters, makes use of theatrical revival as a narrative technique in order to reconstruct present meaning out of the past. Bouchard shows that the theatre can arrive at the truth while remaining an artifice, and through its revival and revision of the past can create an alternative theatrical representation of homosexuality.

This article is about research on theatre as an ongoing theatrical practice. It discusses the often contradictory demands of proximity and distance, of involvement and observation/recording, of advocacy and objective analysis all using the author's approximately twenty years of activity in the field of theatre for young audiences as the basis for the discussion. It asks questions, and does not always provide answers. It proposes that the artists of the stage are researchers in their own right. Without them, there would be no theatre, and no theatre research. It points to the fact that theatre is a living art, in a constant state of transformation, and that to try to pin it down is hazardous.

Cet article traite de la recherche sur le théâtre en tant que pratique théâtrale. Il interroge des options de recherche qui sont parfois contradictoires comme la proximité et la distance, l'implication et l'observation, la défense d'un genre et l'analyse objective-à partir de mon activité personnelle dans le domaine du théâtre enfance/jeunesse pendant près de vingt ans. J'y pose des questions qui ne trouvent pas toujours leur réponse. J'y propose que les artistes de la scène soient considérés comme de véritables chercheurs en théâtre. Sans eux, il n'y aurait pas de théâtre et, partant, pas de recherche sur le théâtre. L'article, enfin, souligne à quel point il serait dangereux d'utiliser la recherche sur le théâtre pourfixer/figer cet art vivant qui est continuellement en mouvement et en transformation.
