Résumé
L’oeuvre d’Hugo Pratt est aujourd’hui reconnue comme fondatrice dans le champ de la bande dessinée, et son influence dans l’établissement de la notion de roman graphique ne fait guère de doute (Baetens et alii). Au sein de cette œuvre, la série d’albums mettant en scène Corto Maltese est sans doute la plus célèbre, et manifeste le plus clairement les caractéristiques associées au roman graphique : contexte historique complexe, ambivalence psychologique des personnages, références littéraires poussées, et récit d’une étendue souvent considérable (Lesage). Un autre trait spécifique frappe également, à savoir la combinaison dans ce cycle de références aux romans d’aventures — Conrad et Stevenson — avec une tendance contemplative dans la mise en scène du récit. Il serait dès lors tentant de rechercher dans les films d’animation adaptés de cette œuvre la même hybridité entre réalisme, attrait pour l’histoire, et abstraction. Paul Wells a ainsi montré (1999) que le film d’animation, dans son rapport à l’adaptation de textes littéraires, se situait au carrefour entre incarnation et déréalisation de l’intrigue. Je propose ici d’étudier une adaptation animée d’un album de Pratt, intitulée Corto Maltese, la Cour secrète des Arcanes (adapté de Corto Maltese en Sibérie, par Pascal Morelli, 2002) pour répondre aux questions suivantes.
Quelles interactions se jouent entre le système sémiotique séquentiel (Groensteen) de la bande dessinée et la mise en récit du film d’animation ? Comment les adaptations renégocient-elles et / ou reconnaissent-elles le système narratif de la bande dessinée à travers leur propre récit, sur le mode de la remédiation (Bolter et Grusin), ou sur le mode de la citation (Boillat) ? Enfin, comment comprendre les écarts narratifs entre les deux œuvres en termes de choix stratégiques d’adaptation et de contexte de production (Bourdier) ? L’approche choisie pour analyser ce corpus passera donc par une étude de l’intermédialité, et abordera les questions soulevées par l’adaptation d’une poétique aussi particulière que celle d’Hugo Pratt.

Abstract
Hugo Pratt is now recognized as an innovator in the field of comics, and his influence in establishing the notion of the graphic novel can hardly be doubted (Baetens and alii). Within his body of works, the series of albums featuring Corto Maltese is certainly the most famous, and most clearly displays the characteristics associated with the graphic novel: a complex historical context, psychological ambivalence in the characters, extensive literary references, and a narrative that is often considerable in scope (Lesage). The reader is also struck by the cycle's combination of references to adventure novels - Conrad and Stevenson - with a contemplative approach to storytelling (with numerous text-free frames, a very gradual editing of action, narrative pauses on faces engrossed in meditation...). It would therefore be tempting to look for the same hybridity between realism, storytelling and abstraction in the animated films adapted from this work. Paul Wells (1999) has shown that the animated film, in its relationship to the adaptation of literary texts, lies at the crossroads between incarnation and derealization of the plot. I propose here to study an animated adaptation of an issue by Pratt, entitled Corto Maltese, la Cour secrète des Arcanes (adapted from Corto Maltese en Sibérie, by Pascal Morelli, 2002) to answer the following questions. What interactions are at play between the sequential semiotic system (Groensteen) of the comic strip and the storytelling of the animated film? How do the adaptations renegotiate and/or recognize the comic book's narrative system through their own narratives, through a phenomenon of remediation (Bolter and Grusin), or through quotation (Boillat)? Finally, how can we understand the narrative differences between the two works in terms of strategic adaptation choices and production context (Bourdier)? The approach chosen to analyze this corpus will therefore be focused on intermediality, and will address questions of poetics related to Pratt's aesthetics.

Christophe Gelly est Professeur de littérature britannique et américaine et d'études cinématographiques à l'Université Clermont Auvergne. Il travaille principalement sur le genre cinématographique, le film noir, et l’adaptation. Il a dirigé le numéro de la revue Écrans consacré à l’adaptation cinématographique des textes du réalisme littéraire français (Écrans, n° 5, 2016 - 1, Le Réalisme français du XIXe siècle et sa transposition à l'écran) et a publié plusieurs études sur la bande dessinée, notamment sur Art Spiegelman (https://www.revue-textimage.com/conferencier/09_recits_en_images_de_soi/gelly1.html), Alan Moore et Jacques Tardi (« Nestor Burma, de Léo Malet à Jacques Tardi, via Jacques-Daniel Norman : 120 Rue de la Gare et ses adaptations », in Bande dessinée et adaptation). Il a co-dirigé avec Gilles Ménégaldo le recueil Lovecraft au prisme de l’image — Littérature, cinéma et arts graphiques (Cadillon, Le Visage Vert, 2017), et a récemment publié une monographie sur le genre dystopique (Le Dérèglement du monde — Formes de la dystopie en littérature et au cinéma, Presses Universitaires de Rennes, 2024).
