Résumé

L’Écriture sans écriture : du langage à l’ère numérique est un patchwork hétéroclite d’essais du poète conceptuel Kenneth Goldsmith dont l’objectif est de renouveler la réflexion sur la création artistique et littéraire dans un monde numérique. Les treize chapitres de cette récente traduction française de François Bon s’emploient à illustrer des concepts tels que le génie non-original, la réappropriation et le recyclage au moyen d’oeuvres artistiques diverses. Y sont ainsi convoquées parmi d’autres les créations de Lawrence Weiner, Henri Chopin, Tan Lin, le Collectif Flarf, Christian Bök, Cervantes et Walter Benjamin. La présente recension tentera de mettre de l’avant la question qui nous apparaît fondamentale chez Goldsmith : l’impermanence du langage ou de toute forme d’identification du symbole à son sens. Si, dans l’espace numérique, les mots apparaissent comme des rebuts indifférenciés produits à la chaîne et susceptibles d’être réutilisés à l’infini dans d’autres contextes, on verra justement que ce recyclage, qui appartient en propre à l’écriture sans écriture, est une opération nécessaire pour qu’émerge la beauté non-préméditée de la « littérature du protocole » telle que la prône Goldsmith.

Abstract

Writing without writing: from language to the digital age is a patchwork of essays by the conceptual poet Kenneth Goldsmith dealing with artistic and literary creation in a digital world. The thirteen chapters of this French translation by François Bon attempts to illustrate such concepts as non-original genius, re-appropriation and recycling through examples drawn from art and literature : Lawrence Weiner, Henri Chopin, Tan Lin, the Flarf Collective, Christian Bök, Cervantes and Walter Benjamin, among others. In the following lines, we will put forward Goldsmith’s central question : the impermanence of language, or of any form of identification of the symbol to its meaning. In the digital age, if words appear as undifferentiated garbage meant to be reused again and again in other contexts, then we can assert that this recycling processus is necessary for the emergence of the unpremeditated beauty of the “protocol literature” as advocated by Goldsmith.
