RÉSUMÉ

Les phénomènes démographiques qui affectent la famille depuis trois décennies ont soulevé un nouvel intérêt pour l'étude de l'influence de la relation conjugale sur le développement psychosocial de l'enfant. Dans un premier temps, nous décrirons brièvement à l'état actuel des connaissances scientifiques quant à l'effet des conflits conjugaux sur l'adaptation psychosociale de enfant. Dans un deuxième temps, au-delà du constat d'un effet négatif des conflits conjugaux sur l'enfant, il sera question des théories et des concepts qui peuvent expliquer cette covariation surtout en regard des problèmes spécifiques chez l'enfant. La troisième partie sera consacrée aux travaux des cliniciens. Nous ferons une revue de leurs succès et des obstacles qui restent à surmonter lorsqu'il s'agit de prévenir les difficultés chez l'enfant ou encore de soutenir les familles déjà touchées par les conflits conjugaux.

ABSTRACT

The demographical phenomena that have affected families for three decades is raising new interest in the study of how marital relations influence the psychosocial development of the child. Firstly, the authors briefly describe the state of scientific knowledge with respect to the effect of marital conflicts on the psychosocial adaptation of the child. Secondly, the authors make an effort to go beyond the negative effects of marital conflict on children, and discuss the theories and concepts that attempt to explain the covariation, especially concerning specific problems undergone by the child. The third part is devoted to clinical work. It includes an overview of successes and obstacles that still need to be overcome when using preventive measures with children, as well as when supporting the families already experiencing marital conflict.
