Résumé
Selon des recherches récentes, l’environnement dans lequel l’enfant se développe influence de façon considérable son acquisition de la littératie. Les compétences en lecture et en écriture des parents constituent un aspect déterminant de cet environnement. La présente recherche s’intéresse aux parents ayant de faibles compétences en lecture et en écriture. Elle tente de mettre en lumière le rapport qu’ils entretiennent envers la littératie. À cet effet, 174 parents fréquentant des classes d’alphabétisation ont répondu à un questionnaire portant sur les variables suivantes : la stimulation à la littératie reçue pendant leur enfance, leur attitude envers la littératie, leurs pratiques de littératie actuelles ainsi que leurs croyances envers l’acquisition de la littératie chez leur enfant. Les participants ont également complété un test permettant de mesurer leur niveau de compétences en lecture et en écriture. Les résultats révèlent des relations significatives entre les variables étudiées et le niveau de compétence en lecture et en écriture.
Abstract
According to recent studies, the environment in which children grow up significantly influences their literacy development. The skills of the parents in reading and writing constitute an important aspect of this environment. The following study concerns low literate parents. Questionnaires were given to 174 parents attending adult literacy classes sampling the following variables: Literacy stimulation received during their childhood, their attitude towards literacy, their actual literacy practices and their beliefs towards their children’s literacy development. The participants also completed a test to determine their level of literacy. Results reveal significant relations between the variables that were studied and the level of competency in reading and writing.
