Abstract
Competitive anxiety is one of the most well-researched topics in sports psychology. Research shows the importance of taking into account different factors related to anxiety, the athlete and his environment to better understand its influence on sports performance. To date, the known debilitating effects of anxiety on athletic performance continue to fuel research and motivate athletes to develop coping strategies to deal with anxiety. This paper presents a critical review of knowledge in order to derive practical recommendations for athletes and sports practitioners.
