Résumé
L’article revient sur deux aspects admis depuis trente ans sur l’histoire de la protection animale en France : le peu d’intérêt pour la souffrance animale elle-même pendant longtemps; une longue focalisation sur des arguments humains, politiques et culturels, avant que le sort des animaux ne prenne assez récemment la première place. Une relecture précise des documents du XIXe siècle montre que l’argument de la souffrance animale est bel et bien présent dès les origines de la protection animale mais qu’il a longtemps une dimension individuelle, non collective, et qu’il est souvent mis en arrière-plan au profit d’arguments plus convenables et plus recevables auprès de l’opinion ou des décideurs politiques. D’autre part, l’importance de la souffrance comme motivation des protecteurs, dès les origines, doit inciter à revoir les analyses à leur égard. Ils ne procèdent pas à de simples projections anthropomorphiques sur des animaux-objets, mais ils sont sensibles aux vécus d’êtres vivants qui sentent, souffrent et réagissent comme les sciences zoologiques le montrent. En croisant histoire, éthologie, sociologie, psychologie, neurobiologie, etc., il faut donner plus de complexité à ces interactions entre des animaux souffrants et des hommes émotionnés, pour mieux les comprendre et mieux appréhender les actions militantes qui en découlent.
Abstract
This article comes back on two recognized aspects for thirty years in the history of animal protection in France: the long-dated lack of interest towards animal suffering itself; a lengthy focus on human, political and cultural arguments before the fate of animals recently takes first place. A specific re-reading of 19th century documents shows that the argument of animal suffering was really present since the origins of animal protection, but under a non-collective, individual, approach often put in background to the advantage of more conceivable and more receivable arguments for public opinion and political decision-makers. On the other hand, the importance of sufferance as a motivation of protectors, since its origin, must incite to review the analyses on the subject. They do no not proceed simple anthropomorphic projection on animals as objects, but are sensitive to experiences of living organisms that feel, suffer and react, as zoological sciences showed. Throughout the scope of history, ethnology, sociology, psychology, neurobiology, etc., it is necessary to confer more complexity to these interactions between suffering animals and emotional man to better understand and better seize the activist actions that result from it.
