Abstract
Access to specialized services is based on an intellectual disability diagnosis. The most difficult criterion to apply concerns the one of adaptive behavior. Problematic behaviors are not clearly defined within this criterion and, for AAIDD, should be considered separately. How two constructs reflecting adaptation may not be associated? This study examines the relationship between adaptive and problematic behaviors. A total of 211 mothers and 164 fathers of children receiving services from a CRDITED filled out a questionnaire while an educator and a teacher respectively assessed children’s adaptive and problematic behaviors. Significant correlations between adaptive and problematic behaviors are observed. It would be appropriate that services’ planning consider more specifically the latter behaviors because child and family support needs are related to them.
