Résumé
Le parcours du chef abénaquis Nescambiouit (vers 1660-1727) personnifie admirablement les hauts et les bas de l’alliance franco-abénaquise. Il participe activement à plusieurs expéditions de guerre effectuées depuis le Massachusetts jusqu’à Terre-Neuve, où il se joint aux troupes françaises afin d’expulser les Anglais. Par le traité d’Utrecht, qui met fin à cette guerre, la France cède le territoire de ses alliés abénaquis sans les consulter. Dans ce contexte, Nescambiouit s’installe à l’ouest du lac Michigan chez les Renards (Outagamis) qui résistent aux Français. Ses liens avec cette nation insoumise menacent l’alliance franco-abénaquise. Les autorités françaises craignent que les Abénaquis des missions d’Odanak et de Wôlinak suivent un chef respecté et que leur départ affaiblisse la défense de la colonie française. Pendant cette période, les archives coloniales abondent en témoignages confirmant la nécessité de conserver l’amitié et le support des Abénaquis, dont celui du chef Nescambiouit. Pour sa part, pendant cette période troublée, la nation abénaquise tente de se maintenir grâce à l’alliance avec les Français.
Abstract
The journey of the Abenaki chief Nescambiouit (around 1660-1727), represents admirably the ups and downs of the French-Abenaki alliance. He actively participates in numerous raids, from Massachusetts to Newfoundland, where he joins French expeditions in order to expel the English from the territory. Following the Treaty of Utrecht, which ended this war, France decides to give up the Abenakis’ land, without their consent. As a result, Nescambiouit moves among the Fox (Outagamis), west of Lake Michigan, where that nation still resists the French subjugation. Nescambiouit’s relations with the insubordinate Fox compromise the French- Abenaki alliance. French authorities fear that their allies at Odanak and Wôlinak will stay faithful to Nescambiouit, a well respected chief, and this decision may weaken the strength of the French colony. During this period, the colonial archives abound with evidence which confirms the French necessity of maintaining the friendship and the support of the Abenakis, as well as with Nescambiouit. The Abenakis also need this relation to maintain their integrity.
