Abstract
The study of habitant culture is a long story that continues to the present day. This research focuses in particular on its representation in the xixth, xxth and the xxist centuries. The analytical framework emphasizes critical judgements expressed about the pioneer habitant, given the overwhelmingly negative observations made about him by various commentators, whether politicians, journalists, missionaries, writers, illustrators or travelers. In their eyes, the habitant is the “Other”, a figure who is unable to attain the status of farmer, let alone that of agricultural producer : he is said to be satisfied with his lot, confined in his traditions, and little interested in education or in new agricultural methods. In reality, socio-economic barriers to modernity are what accentuated these perceptions, thus bringing about the marginalization of the habitant.
