Les think tanks dans le champ médiatique canadien

Résumé

Cet article apporte une contribution empirique à la littérature sur la relation entre think tanks et médias en répondant à quatre grandes questions au sujet de l’espace canadien. Premièrement, nous documentons la relation entre le budget d’un think tank et sa visibilité médiatique. Deuxièmement, nous caractérisons l’expertise des think tanks canadiens selon la distribution des thèmes sur lesquels ils sont mentionnés. Troisièmement, nous démontrons que les médias canadiens ne font pas un usage intensif de la norme de l’équilibre des points de vue lorsqu’ils mentionnent ces organisations. Finalement, nous analysons les facteurs qui semblent être responsables des grandes disparités dans la distribution des mentions aux think tanks d’un média à l’autre.

Abstract

This article answers four questions about the relationship between mass media and think tanks in Canada. First, we study the (relatively weak) association between a think tank’s budget and the number of times it is mentioned in mass media. Second, we characterize think tank expertise by using the topics on which they are most mentioned. Third, we show that Canadian mass media do not rely extensively on the norm of balance when they mention these organizations. Finally, we analyze the factors that appear responsible for the observed differences in the distribution of think tank mentions from one media to the next.
