Support et iconicité, ou l’apparence sans qualités

Résumé

À partir de remarques de Peirce prouvant qu’il était sensible à la «qualité » de certains supports, on s’interroge sur le fait qu’il n’ait pas pris en compte cette qualité dans sa conception de l’« icône ». L’hypothèse avancée ici est que cette ignorance – ou ce refus – a son origine dans la définition que Platon avait donnée luimême de l’icône, et qui est fondée sur l’amalgame d’interprétations erronées relatives à la peinture et à l’écriture. La notion de « représentation », notamment, est à l’origine de confusions qui ont interdit à Platon – puis à Peirce – de voir que la différence essentielle qui sépare idéogramme et lettre alphabétique repose sur la relation fonctionnelle que l’un entretient, et l’autre non, avec son support.

Abstract

From remarks by Peirce proving that he was sensitive to the “ quality ” of certain fields or supports, I am led to inquire into the reasons for his not having taken this quality into account in his conception of the icon. I hypothesize that this ignorance – or refusal – stems originally from Plato’s definition of the icon, which is based upon a confused set of interpretations concerning painting and writing systems. The notion of “ representation ” in particular is at the heart of misconceptions which prevented first Plato, then Peirce, from realizing that the essential difference between an ideogram and a letter of the alphabet is determined by the former’s, but not the latter’s, functional relation with its supporting medium.
