Historians of Southwestern United States history and culture have created the concept of a borderland to explain the historical circumstances of the area where Anglo-America ran into Hispanic America. Its application to the Upper Canada-Great Lakes area during 1837-1838 will allow a re-interpretation of the Canadian Rebellions of 1837 and the subsequent invasions of 1838 as part of a borderland war. Hopefully this approach will eliminate any tensions over the nationalist component of the Canadian Exiles or American Patriot Hunters. I also want to focus on the Battle of Prescott or the Windmill as the significant event of this borderland war, relying on the writings of two of the Exile narrativists, William Gates and Stephen Wright. Finally I hope to contribute some reflections on the significance of these Exiles/Patriots after almost twenty years of an acquaintance of sort with them.

Les historiens spécialisés dans l’étude de la culture et de l’histoire du sud-ouest des États-Unis, ont développé le concept de « région frontalière » pour rendre compte des circonstances historiques du face à face des Espagnols et des Anglo-Américains dans cette région. Reprenant ce concept, et l’appliquant à la région des Grands Lacs et du Haut-Canada pendant les années 1837-1838, nous réexaminons dans cet article les rébellions de 1837 et les invasions qui ont suivi en 1838. Nous les réinterprétons comme des épisodes d’une guerre de régions frontalières, une approche qui pourrait notamment permettre, nous l’espérons, d’éliminer les tensions créées par l’élément nationaliste chez les Exilés canadiens ou les Patriotes américains. Notre étude, qui s’appuie sur les récits qu’en on fait deux exilés, William Gates et Stephen Wright, traite plus particulièrement de la bataille de Prescott, celle dite du Moulin à Vent, un événement déterminant de cette guerre. Après avoir travaillé depuis près de vingt ans sur les Exilés/Patriotes, je cherche ainsi à ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives sur cet épisode de l’histoire canadienne.

This article looks at the reaction of the British military authorities in Kingston to the outbreak of the Upper Canada Rebellion in December 1837. The revolt had come at an awkward time. The vast majority of Kingston’s regular garrison had been earlier dispatched to quell the uprising in Lower Canada leaving the town open to Patriot attack. As well, Fort Henry, whose construction had begun in 1832 and the lynch pin of a proposed system of fortifications designed to protect the province’s chief military depot, Royal Navy dockyard and the entrance to the Rideau Canal, was not yet complete. Lead by Richard Bonnycastle of the Royal Engineers, a small cadre of British regulars and retired veterans took vigorous steps to organize and train the eager but raw Canadian militia and volunteers. The effectiveness of the training was realized in late February 1838 when the Patriots made their major attempt to capture Kingston.

Nous étudions dans cet article les mesures prises par les autorités militaires britanniques en poste à Kington, pour répondre au déclenchement de la rébellion du Haut-Canada en décembre 1837. Cette rébellion eut lieu à un moment particulièrement difficile, la plupart de la garnison régulière de Kingston venant d’être envoyée au Bas-Canada pour y éteindre la révolte, laissant ainsi la ville ouverte aux attaques des Patriotes. De plus, la construction de Fort Henry, commencée en 1832, n’était pas encore achevée; or ce fort devait être l’un des éléments essentiels d’un système de fortifications qui visait à protéger le principal dépôt militaire de la province, les entrepôts de la Marine Royale et l’entrée du canal Rideau. The Rebellions of 1837 and subsequent border raids by American sympathizers prompted colonial officials to call out local militia units for extended duty. The threat of armed conflict and political uncertainty heightened the underlying social, class and ethno-cultural tensions that existed in Upper Canadian society. This article examines the impact of the Rebellions in the Peterborough area, particularly among the Irish settlers, and how these tensions were manifested in the actions of the 7th Provisional Battalion during the period they were stationed in Peterborough.

Ce danger d’un conflit armé, l’incertitude politique, ravivèrent alors les tensions sociales et culturelles qui existaient déjà dans la société du Haut-Canada, tensions dues aux différences de classe ou d’origine d’ethnique. Dans cet article nous étudions l’impact des rébellions dans la région de Peterborough, particulièrement parmi les habitants d’origine irlandaise, et comment ces tensions se sont reflétées dans les actions menées par le 7th Provisional Bataillon pendant la période où il était stationné à Peterborough.

This article will focus on the plight of ninety-three English speaking, North American political prisoners who were given a one-way ticket and ended up in the Van Diemen’s Land penal system, as a result of their involvement in the incursions into Upper Canada and the associated rebellious acts committed in 1838. The end of rebellion in Canada was the beginning of experiences significant to the historical record in Australia. The capture, incarceration and transportation of Patriot exiles to Van Diemen’s Land and the stories of their imprisonment, release and repatriation form an intriguing episode in Australia’s and Canada’s twinned heritage.

Nous étudierons dans cet article la situation critique dans laquelle se retrouvèrent 93 prisonniers politiques américains qui furent déportés en Australie à la suite de leur participation aux incursions dans le Haut-Canada et aux actes de rébellion qui y furent commis en 1838. La capture, l’emprisonnement puis la déportation de Patriotes à Van Diemen’s Land, l’histoire de leur séjour dans cette colonie pénale, puis leur libération et leur rapatriement, est un épisode qui retient l’attention dans l’héritage commun du Canada et de l’Australie.
