Note biographique
Hershl Novak (Piotrkow Trybunalski, Pologne, 1891 – New York, 1952)
Dans sa ville natale, Novak fréquente une académie talmudique et reçoit une éducation judaïque traditionnelle. Dès son arrivée à Montréal en 1909, il s’engage dans la création d’un réseau d’écoles juives de langue yiddish. À partir de 1910, il rédige pour la presse yiddish canadienne de courts récits et des textes inspirés de légendes juives. En 1921, il quitte Montréal pour New York, où il publie ses mémoires en 1957 sous le titre Fun mayn yunge yorn [De mes années de jeunesse].
