Abstract
The aim of this study is to outline the most significant moments in the translation history of Christian Orthodox prayer texts, from Greek, Russian (or Slavonic) and English into French, in the 20th century and the early 21st century. It focuses on the texts of personal prayers, destined for the believers’ private religous practice. Six prayer books have been tackled, out of which five have been printed. Three printed books have been published in France by religious, mostly monastic publishing houses, one in Italy (in French) and another one in Belgium, while the sixth is available online on the leading Francophone Orthodox blog («orthodoxologie.blogspot.com»). The conclusion of the study highlights the fact that all these translation endeavours aimed at a proper course of the believers’ ceremonial practice and prayer life, both traditional and in their native language. Consequently, these actions have been based on an inherent pastoral necessity and thus illustrate a genuine (meta)translational awareness of the translators with respect to the creation of a translation tradition. This is the result of a translation intertextuality network (also approached in the study) rather than one of successive retranslations.
