Abstract
Multilingualism can be used to show how identity and characterisation are negotiated through language use. However, linguistic diversity is often homogenised in translation. In this paper, multilingualism is seen as a liminal space in products in which hyphenated identities are constructed through linguistic diversity. Translating multilingualism in this context is crucial since, if it is turned into monolingualism, this will limit the possibilities for new meanings to be introduced to new target cultures. I present a case study on the American television series Jane The Virgin (2014-2019) in which English and Spanish coexist, and the ability to understand and speak Spanish is an integral part of the characters’ identity and relationships. Comparing the French and Spanish versions points to homogenisation: the analysis ultimately demonstrates that since multilingualism can be understood as a liminal in-between space, its translation should be carefully considered so that new concepts of hyphenated identity and liminality can endure in translation.

Le multilinguisme peut être utilisé pour montrer comment l’identité et la caractérisation sont négociées à travers l’utilisation de la langue. Cependant, lorsqu’elle est traduite, la diversité linguistique est souvent homogénéisée. Dans cet article, le multilinguisme est considéré comme un espace liminal au sein des produits audiovisuels dans lesquels l’identité à trait d’union est construite à travers la diversité linguistique. Traduire le multilinguisme dans ce contexte est crucial car, s’il est aplani en monolinguisme, cela limitera les possibilités d’introduire dans les cultures cibles des sens nouveaux liés à la liminalité. Je présente une étude de cas sur la série télévisée américaine Jane The Virgin (2014-2019) dans laquelle l’anglais et l’espagnol coexistent, et où la capacité de comprendre et de parler l’espagnol fait partie intégrante de l’identité des personnages et de leurs relations. La comparaison des versions françaises et espagnoles indique une homogénéisation : en somme, l’analyse démontre que puisque le multilinguisme peut être compris comme un espace intermédiaire liminal, sa traduction doit être soigneusement réfléchie afin que de nouveaux concepts d’identité à trait d’union et de liminalité puissent perdurer en traduction.

El multilingüismo se puede utilizar para mostrar cómo se negocian la identidad y la caracterización mediante el uso del lenguaje. Sin embargo, cuando se traduce, la diversidad lingüística a menudo se homogeneiza. En este artículo se considera el multilingüismo como un espacio liminal dentro de los productos audiovisuales en los que se construye la identidad con guión a través de la diversidad lingüística. Traducir el multilingüismo en este contexto es crucial porque, si se reduce a monolingüismo, limitará las posibilidades de introducir nuevos significados relacionados con la liminalidad en las culturas de destino. Presento un estudio de caso sobre la serie de televisión estadounidense Jane The Virgin (2014-2019) en la que conviven el inglés y el español, y la capacidad de entender y hablar español es parte integral de la identidad de los personajes y sus relaciones. La comparación de las versiones en francés y español indica una homogeneización: al final, el análisis demuestra que, dado que el multilingüismo puede entenderse como un espacio intermedio liminal, su traducción debe ser cuidadosamente considerada para que los nuevos conceptos de identidad puedan dividirse y la liminalidad pueda persistir en traducción.
