L’opposition des deux parties du discours adjectif/substantif Définitions et ajustements terminologiques

Résumé

S'il est admis dans notre tradition occidentale que l'adjectif est issu de la catégorie du nom pour en constituer une sous-classe à côté du substantif, son installation en tant que partie du discours autonome n'a pas été évidente. Et la permanence, en dépit de nombreuses mises en question, de l'opposition substantif / adjectif , traduisant la distinction aristotélicienne substance / qualité , peut s'expliquer par la concordance de différents facteurs : i) correspondance du plan extra-linguistique et du plan sémantique, ii) caractéristiques syntaxiques qui en découlent, l'adjectif étant obligatoirement en relation d'épithète ou d'attribut avec son support substantif. iii) variations morphologiques, très marquées en latin pour l'adjectif qui s'adapte aux trois genres. L'hésitation sur le choix des critères est peut-être responsable des diverses appellations proposées : historiquement le terme d' épithète est premier, d'abord uniquement rhétorique ou explicatif avant de devenir déterminatif. Mais, d'un point de vue logique, grâce à sa fonction predicative , l'adjectif étant considéré aussi comme le résultat d'une attribution antérieure, acquiert son autonomie et prend la troisième place de l'énoncé. Les catégories intermédiaires comme celle du substantif dérivé d'adjectif (beau / beauté,) viennent compliquer la classification de cette partie du discours fondamentalement ambivalente du fait des deux composantes de sa signification : l'adjectif signifiant principalement la qualité et référant en même temps au substantif qui en est le support.

Abstract

Even if it is accepted that in our western tradition the adjective is derived from the category of the noun to form a sub-class, in addition to the substantive, its institution as an autonomous part of speech has not been without difficulty. The distinction adjective / substantive , which derives from the Aristotelian opposition substance / accidence , has been maintained despite having been questioned frequently. This is explained by the concordance of a number of different factors: i) the correspondence of the extralinguistic aspect with the semantic aspect, ii) the syntactic characteristics which result from this, the adjective being necessarilly in an attributive or epithet relationship with its substantive, iii) morphological variations, highly marked in Latin for the adjective, which is modified for three genders. Hesitation over the choice of criteria is responsable for the diversity of labels suggested: historically the term « épithète » was first rhetorial or explicative then becoming determinative. But from a logical point of view the adjective, considered as the result of a previous attribution, takes over the third position in the utterance. Intermediate categories such as the substantive derived from an adjective beau/beauté) complicate the classification of this fundamentally ambivalent category, (ci. the two components of meaning).
