Résumé

Les cinéastes Pierre Falardeau et Denys Arcand ont tous deux témoigné de leur admiration pour l’oeuvre de l’historien Maurice Séguin (1918-1984). Ce dernier a proposé une nouvelle interprétation de l’histoire du Québec qui accordait à la Conquête anglaise une place déterminante. Cette interprétation se fondait sur une réflexion théorique originale qui a fait école. Nous avons revisité les oeuvres des deux cinéastes afin de voir qui, de Falardeau ou d’Arcand, avait le plus d’affinités avec la pensée théorique et historique de Séguin. La comparaison des oeuvres permet de se pencher sur le rôle qu’accordait Séguin à la volonté humaine dans l’histoire. C’est sur ce terrain qu’Arcand se rapproche le plus de Séguin puisque les deux semblent adhérer à une conception nomologique de l’histoire.

Abstract

The filmmakers Pierre Falardeau and Denys Arcand have both expressed their admiration for the work of historian Maurice Séguin (1918-1984). Séguin proposed a new interpretation of the history of Quebec that gave a determining role to the English Conquest. This interpretation was founded on an original theoretical reflection that has had lasting influence. We revisit the work of the two filmmakers in order to find out whether Falardeau or Arcand had more of an affinity with Séguin's historical and theoretical thought. The comparison of their works can center on the role Séguin accorded to human will in history. It is on these grounds that Arcand is closest to Séguin, since both seem to adhere to a nomological conception of history.
