Summary
In the Cape Smith Belt, a highly alkaline sequence of volcanic rocks overlies the tholeiitic basalts of the Povungnituk Group. This sequence consists of basanites/nephe-linites and phonolites. All lavas display high Zr, Nb, Ti values, and the mafic lavas containprimary titaniferous clinopyroxene. Crystal fractionation models indicate that the evolution of the mafic lavas was dominated by clinopyroxene fractionation. The phonolites are most reasonably interpreted as products of extensive fractionation of feldspar from abasanitic parent.
The Cape Smith alkaline suite is similar toPhanerozoic undersaturated lava suites and is interpreted as part of an alkaline volcanic island developed on the continental margin of an opening oceanic rift basin. The chemistry of the alkaline rocks from the Cape Smith Belt suggests similar processes for the generation alkaline melts in the Proterozoic and Phanerozoic mantle.

Dans la bande du Cap Smith, une séquencede roches volcaniques fortement alcalinessurmonte localement les basaltes tholéiitiques et les sédiments du Groupe de Po-vungnituk. Cette séquence se caractérisepar des basanites/néphélinites et des pho-nolites montrant des valeurs élevées en Zr,Nb, Ti. Les laves mafiques contiennentessentiellement des clinopyroxènes titani-fères primaires. Les modèles de cristallisa-tion fractionée indiquent que l'évolution deslaves mafiques fut dominée par le fraction-nement du clinopyroxene. Les phonolitessont interprétées comme résultant du frac-tionnement extensif de felspath, à partird'un liquide parent basanitique.
La suite alcaline de Cap Smith est simi-laire aux suites sous-saturées du phanéro-zoïque. Elle semble avoir formé une îlevolcanique alcaline développée sur la margecontinentale d'un océan en cours d'ouver-ture. La géochimie de ces laves suggère queles liquides alcalins ont été formés par desprocessus similaires dans les manteaux pro-térozoïque et phanérozoïque.
