L’utilité est-elle le meilleur fondement de la tolérance ?

Résumé

Il existe deux façons fondamentales de justifier la tolérance : soit la conception qui la fait reposer sur la " personne " ou sur la volonté autonome, comme on peut la trouver chez Locke ou chez Kant ; soit la conception utilitariste qui calcule qu'il est plus utile de pratiquer la tolérance que de ne pas la pratiquer. Nous cherchons à établir que les meilleures chances de la tolérance tiennent plutôt dans cet utilitarisme, c'est-à-dire dans la conjugaison d'un certain type de structuration du champ social et d'un mode d'attachement indirect, aveugle ou symbolique aux valeurs.

Abstract

There are two main ways to justify tolerance ; either the conception which makes it depend on the "person", that is the autonomous will, as it may be found in the works of Locke or Kant ; or the utilitarian conception which calculates that it is more useful to practice tolerance than not to. We are seeking to establish that the better chances of tolerance are on the side of utilitarinism which associates a certain structure of the social field and a certain indirect, blind or symbolic link to values.
