Zumthor en Bakhtinie. Picaresque et modernité

Résumé

Cet article examine d'abord les raisons qui ont amené Mikhaïl Bakhtine à considérer le roman picaresque comme l'ancêtre du grand roman, tout en lui déniant l'appartenance à cette catégorie, pour des raisons de langage surtout. Puis il étudie les caractéristiques attribuées à la veine picaresque telles qu'elles sont disséminées dans les travaux de Bakhtine. Ces marques sont ensuite appliquées à un roman de Paul Zumthor, la Fête des fous , et servent à vérifier comment la tradition picaresque peut encore inspirer un roman moderne et si l'adoption de ses mécanismes condamne l'oeuvre à relever d'un genre inférieur.

Abstract

This article examines, first, the reasons for Mikhail Bakhtin's accepting the picaresque novel as the progenitor of the grand novel tradition while denying it, mainly for reasons of language, a place in the mainstream of the genre. It then goes on to identify formal features of the picaresque in Bakhtin's works, and examines in light of these Paul Zumthor's novel la Fête des fous. It should be possible, by means of this comparison, to determine whether, and to what extent, the picaresque tradition can be adapted to the modern novel, and whether the use of its formal devices in fact condemns a novel to becoming part of an inferior genre.
