Abstract
Perec's la Disparition never ceases to point to what has prompted its writing, the omission of the letter E. Hence the danger of repetition in a text which states its inability to name what is, by its own definition, unnameable. Hence too, the need to introduce variety into the self- referential system. The use and function of borrowings, ranging from quotations from existing lipograms to lipograms of quotations and lipogrammatic reductions of whole volumes, is particularly successful in refuelling the generative process by providing new material to be transformed and included. Unsuspected implications are bestowed on individual borrowings and bonds forged between texts which seemed to have little in common; previous literary symbols such as Moby Dick are read in literal terms while the symbolic significance of the missing sign is gradually enriched, to great humourous advantage.
