Le destin tragique de Jeanne. Réflexion sociopoétique et ethnopoétique sur un malheur annoncé (Jeanne de George Sand)

Résumé

Cet article montre comment Jeanne, roman champêtre et roman social, est aussi un roman tragique et un roman du malheur. Son héroïne, une jeune paysanne analphabète qui vit en symbiose étroite avec la nature, meurt en se jetant d’une fenêtre. Ce roman du malheur se construit à partir des représentations du milieu paysan dans la France du premier xix^e siècle, en comparaison avec d’autres classes sociales – notamment la bourgeoisie. C’est le conflit entre ces différentes sphères et leur idéologie respective qui fait malheur. Mais cette expression du malheur rehausse finalement les valeurs incarnées par Jeanne et, paradoxalement, ici, fait poésie.

Abstract

This article shows how Jeanne, a pastoral novel and a social novel, is also a tragic novel and a novel of misfortune. Its heroine, a young illiterate peasant who lives in symbiosis with nature, dies jumping from a window. This novel of hardship builds upon the representations of the rural society in France, in the first 19th century, compared with other classes—notably the bourgeoisie. It is the conflict opposing these different spheres and their respective ideology that brings about misfortune. But this expression of misfortune ultimately emphasizes the values embodied by Jeanne, and paradoxically, here, brings about poetry.
