Une « soif de lendemain » : le futur dans le premier théâtre de Sony Labou Tansi

Résumé

Entre 1971 et 1974, Sony Labou Tansi propose quatre pièces d’anticipation au comité de lecture du Concours théâtral interafricain : Le Bombardé (1971), Le Ventre (1972), Conscience de tracteur (1973) et La Gueule de rechange (1974). Ce corpus se fonde sur des projections temporelles relativement proches du présent de l’écriture ; les intrigues s’y déploient, en effet, dans un xx^e siècle finissant. À un futur polarisé par la seconde moitié des années 1990 s’ajoute une seconde particularité, liée à la question de « l’afrotopisme » (Anthony Mangeon, 2022). Selon des modalités variées, les quatre pièces évoquent l’avènement d’une humanité nouvelle, tournée vers un avenir à penser et à construire. Afin de cerner les caractéristiques et les enjeux de ce théâtre d’anticipation, une formule utilisée dans l’« Épilogue » du Bombardé organise la réflexion du présent article : une inextinguible « soif de lendemain » y est exprimée.

Abstract

Between 1971 and 1974, Sony Labou Tansi submits four anticipation plays to the Concours théâtral interafricain : Le Bombardé (1971), Le Ventre (1972), Conscience de tracteur (1973) and La Gueule de rechange (1974). This corpus is based on time projections relatively close to the present tense of writing ; the events of each play, indeed, take place at the end of the 20^th century. To this choice of the late 1990’s must be added a second peculiarity, linked to the issue of « afrotopisme » (Anthony Mangeon, 2022). With different literary devices, these plays evoke the advent of a new humanity, turned towards a future to think and build. The following essay studies the characteristics and the aims of these anticipation plays from an image used in the « Épilogue » of Le Bombardé : in this text, an unquenchable « soif de lendemain » is expressed.
