Marc-Antoine Charpentier chez les Abénaquis ou la petite histoire d’une Chanson des Bergers au Nouveau-Monde

Résumé

Le présent article porte sur un fragment d’oratorio de Marc-Antoine Charpentier découvert parmi la musique vocale religieuse adaptée dès le dernier quart du XVII^e siècle par les jésuites du Canada à l’intention des Abénaquis convertis au catholicisme. La reconstitution du parcours ayant mené la Chanson des Bergers (H.420) depuis Paris jusqu’au Canada, tout autant que le processus d’adaptation de l’oeuvre aux nécessités de son nouveau milieu, sont au coeur de l’analyse que nous proposons.

Abstract

The following article is devoted to the study of a Marc-Antoine Charpentier Christmas oratorio's fragment. The later was discovered in the vocal religious repertoire adapted by French Jesuits of Canada for the uses of Saint-Francis Mission's Abnaki during the last quarter of 17th century. The reconstitution of the journey taken by the "Chanson des Bergers" (Sheppard's Song - H.420) from Paris to Canada as well as the adaptation process that the work had to undergo in order to better suit its new environment, are at the heart of our analysis.
