Abstract
John XXIII began the work of Vatican II on Octobert 11, 1962 with a speech that few of those assembled could have anticipated. The surprises, however, did not stop there. Soon after, the Conciliar Fathers set aside the agenda which had been established for the council’s work. The request to postpone votes within the various commissions of the Council, the unplanned discussion of a Message to Humanity, the rejection of De fontibus—none of these were in keeping with the welllaid plans of the Curia. An examination of the documentation leads one to conclude that the reversals of October had already been mapped out by May of that year in the major dioceses of central Europe. In North America, Léger seems to have been the only player who participated in this broad coalition which did so much to change the course of Vatican II.
