Abstract
This exploratory study examines the professional integration of beginner teaching staff of immigrant origin in the context of Francophone schools in Alberta. The challenges mentioned by these teachers are related to their status as beginning and triple minority teachers. Their professional integration calls for a process of (re)building their professional and self-identity allowing them to adapt to a different school environment and educational culture. If the ideal for these participants were to teach in a Francophone school context, research indicates that the majority obtained their first teaching position in French immersion programs run by Anglophone school boards; very few obtained a job in the Francophone school sector. Participants receive some entry-level support, but this is neither generalized nor specific. Pairing with an experienced mentor who has an affinity with the migration process is appreciated by participants who feel supported and understood. Peer-to-peer reception and school management also have positive effects on entry into employment. However, the reception, openness and support vary depending on the school context and culture. Longitudinal and comparative research is needed to identify the careers paths of Francophone teachers of immigrant origin in Alberta.
