Résumé
Cet essai se penche sur les liens entre les représentations du voyage et les représentations des drogues dans les journaux de voyage contemporains. En tant que genre populaire non romanesque, le journal de voyage aide à structurer la perception du public à l’égard du voyage. Cependant, tout comme plusieurs autres formes d’écriture sur les voyages, il dépeint fréquemment les drogues. Nombre de journaux de voyage présentent des écrivains voyageant avec de la drogue, voyageant sous l’effet de la drogue, ou voyageant pour s’en procurer. Les journaux de voyage contemporains présentent souvent le voyage comme étant une métaphore paradigmatique, pourtant problématique, qui sert à comprendre divers genres d’expériences en lien avec la drogue : celles qui servent à acquérir des connaissances sur soi ou à subir des transformations, celles qui vont à la rencontre de l’altérité radicale ou cherchent à la domestiquer sous des formulations néocoloniales. Il est question dans ces pages de deux journaux de voyage relatant l’expérience des drogues, publiés à la fin du 20e siècle : Chasing the Dragon: Into the Heart of the Golden Triangle (1996) de Christopher Cox et Eating the Flowers of Paradise: A Journey Through the Drug Fields of Ethiopia and Yémen (1998) de Kevin Rushby. Mon analyse explore la façon avec laquelle ces récits populaires imaginent la connexion mobilité/intoxication et comment ces connexions font intervenir la double thématique de la mobilité planétaire et de la circulation et de la consommation illicites de substances psychotropes.

Abstract
This essay theorizes the relationship between representations of travel and representations of drugs in contemporary nonfiction drug travelogues. As a popular nonfiction genre, the travelogue helps structure public perceptions of travel but, like many other forms of travel writing, frequently depicts drugs. A relatively large number of travelogues feature writers traveling with drugs, traveling on drugs, or traveling for drugs. Contemporary travelogues frequently offer travel as a paradigmatic yet problematic metaphor for understanding various kinds of drug experiences: those that involve acquiring self-knowledge or undergoing transformation, those that involve encountering radical alterity or domesticating it in neo-colonial formulations. At issue here are two drug travelogues published at the end of the twentieth century: Christopher Cox’s Chasing the Dragon: Into the Heart of the Golden Triangle (1996), and Kevin Rushby’s Eating the Flowers of Paradise: A Journey Through the Drug Fields of Ethiopia and Yemen (1998). My analysis explores how these popular accounts imagine the mobility/intoxication nexus and how that nexus engages with the dual thematics of global mobility and the illicit movement and consumption of mind-altering substances.

Este ensayo estudia los vínculos entre las representaciones del viaje y las representaciones de las drogas en los diarios de viaje contemporáneos. En cuanto género popular y no romanesco, el diario de viaje ayuda a estructurar la percepción del público con respecto al viaje. Sin embargo, al igual que muchas otras formas de escritura sobre viajes, describe con frecuencia las drogas. Una cantidad de diarios de viaje describen el periplo de escritores que viajan con drogas, bajo los efectos de la droga o cuyo objetivo es procurarla. Los diarios de viaje contemporáneos presentan a menudo el viaje como una metáfora paradigmática y, sin embargo, problemática, que sirve para comprender diversos tipos de experiencia relacionadas con la droga: las que sirven para obtener el conocimiento de sí mismo o para experimentar transformaciones, las que van al encuentro de la alteridad radical o las que buscan domesticarla bajo formulaciones neocoloniales. En estas páginas se analizan dos diarios de viaje que relatan la experiencia de las drogas, publicados a fines del siglo 20: Chasing the Dragon: Into the Heart of the Golden Triangle (1996), de Christopher Cox, y Eating the Flowers of Paradise: A Journey Through the Drug Fields of Ethiopia and Yémen (1998) de Kevin Rushby. Mi análisis explora la manera como estos relatos populares imaginan la conexión movilidad/intoxicación y como estas conexiones hacen intervenir la doble temática de la movilidad planetaria y de la circulación y el consumo ilícito de sustancias psicotrópicas.
