Résumé

RIBLIN (Réseau informatisé de bibliothèques/Library Information Network) a été formé à la dissolution du réseau Télécat-Unicat (Télécatalogage en coopération-Union catalogue). Ce projet coopératif de télécatalogage bilingue, en temps réel et en mode conversationnel, avait été élaboré en 1973. En 1980, plus de vingt bibliothèques du Québec et de l’Ontario, universitaires pour la plupart, y participaient.

Le projet d’origine visait plusieurs objectifs. Un des plus importants était la formation d’un catalogue collectif ordinolingue, lequel comptait plus de 900 000 dossiers lors de l’effritement du groupe Télécat-Unicat survenu en juin 1980 à la suite du retrait massif des bibliothèques ontariennes. Les causes de ce mouvement de retrait furent de diverses natures. Les participants ontariens remettaient en question, entre autres choses, le principe de la collaboration et la nécessité du maintien de services communs.

Pour leur part, les bibliothèques québécoises participantes manifestèrent leur volonté de poursuivre la collaboration et formèrent, dès août 1980, un nouveau consortium, RIBLIN inc., qui prit la relève du premier organisme en poursuivant sensiblement les mêmes objectifs. Du point de vue technologique, peu de changements majeurs sont intervenus si ce n’est une nouvelle architecture des fichiers permettant plus de souplesse dans l’utilisation des données stockées.

Abstract

RIBLIN (Réseau informatisé de bibliothèques/Library Information Network) was created after the dissolution of the Télécat-Unicat network (Télécatalogage en coopération-Union catalogue). This project of a bilingual cooperative telecataloguing system, on-line and in conversational mode, had been developed in 1973. In 1980, more than twenty libraries, mainly at the university level, in Quebec and in Ontario, were active in the project.

The original project aimed at many objectives. One of the most important was the creation of a union catalogue. This data base included more than 900 000 notices in June 1980 when the Télécat-Unicat network collapsed due to the mass withdrawal of the Ontarian libraries. This withdrawal may be imputed to various determinants. The members from Ontario were questioning, among other things, the principle of cooperation and the necessity to maintain common services.

As for the libraries from Quebec, they evinced a will to maintain their cooperation, by creating, as soon as 1980, a new network, RIBLIN Inc., in replacement of the first system while pursuing much the same objectives. Technology-wise, there were few changes, except for the restructuration of the catalogues which allows more flexibility in the use of the data base.

Resumen

RIBLIN (Réseau informatisé de bibliothèques/Library Information Network) se formó a consecuencia de la disolución de la red de bibliotecas Télécat-Unicat (Télécatalogage en coopération – Union Catalogue). Este proyecto cooperativo de telecatalogación bilingüe, de tiempo real y de modo conversacional, había sido elaborado en 1973. En 1980, más de veinte bibliotecas de las provincias de Quebec y de Ontario, en gran mayoría universitarias, participaban a este proyecto.

El proyecto inicial tenía como motivo varios objetivos. Uno de los más importantes era la formación de un catálogo centralizado de acceso directo que contaba con más de 900 000 referencias bibliográficas cuando se disolvió el grupo Télécat-Unicat en junio de 1980 a consecuencia de la demisión general, por diversos motivos, de las bibliotecas ontarienses. Los participantes ontarienses interrogaban el principio de la colaboración y la necesidad del mantenimiento de servicios comunes.

Por su parte, las bibliotecas quebequenses miembros de Télécat-Unicat demostraron un interés a trabajar en colaboración y formaron en agosto de 1980 un nuevo consorcio, RIBLIN Inc., el cual reemplazó el organismo anterior con motivo de mantener en parte los mismos objetivos. Del punto de vista tecnológico pocos cambios mayores se efectuaron. El resultado fue una nueva organización de los ficheros, la cual facilitó la utilización de los datos ya incorporados al sistema.
