Abstract
The impact of chronic pain on the social functioning of young adults is an understudied phenomenon. However, they are experiencing an important developmental stage: the transition to adulthood. This transition, complexified by chronic pain, is marked by another organizational transition when they are transferred from pediatric care to adult care. This article presents a narrative review of the literature on the experiences of young people living with chronic pain transitioning to adult life. The results show that in addition to experiencing stigma and invalidation, chronic pain in young adults creates challenges in terms of identity and independence development. The transition from pediatric to adult care also causes a significant loss of direction. Finally, chronic pain affects several areas of life for young adults: personal, family, interpersonal and occupational. The results of this review highlight the importance of better understanding the psychosocial experience of these young adults. They also show that research and practice in social work has a significant role to play in giving them a voice and contributing to their empowerment.
