Abstract
While it is known that the perspective of individuals exposed to intimate partner violence during childhood or adolescence may act as a risk or protection factor, little research has examined subjectivity among these individuals and how they define such violence. This article presents the few studies that have looked at the perspective of those exposed to intimate partner violence and what this phenomenon represents to them. A critical analysis of these studies indicates that individuals exposed to this violence have a very personal way of comprehending this phenomenon but that significant nuances exist since these individuals do not form a homogeneous group with a totally identical life experience. In addition, the studies examined also contain certain limitations that future research must overcome in order to expand our knowledge of the unique perspectives of individuals exposed to intimate partner violence and to more appropriately meet their specific needs.
