Abstract
To this day, there is no consensus in the academic literature regarding the characteristic of sadistic sexual offenders. This lack of consensus largely stems from the limitations of existing studies regarding this phenomenon. For instance, certain studies employ idiosyncratic definitions of sexual sadism, with the studied samples being heterogeneous, and the study timeframe often solely focusing on adulthood. To address these limitations, we sought to identify distinctive characteristics of both sadistic sexual offenders (n = 69), as well as non-sadistic offenders (n = 137) who target adult women, based on a sample of offenders incarcerated in Quebec, Canada. The Severe Sexual Sadism Scale (SESAS), an empirically validated instrument, was employed to classify these offenders. Bivariate (chi-square) analyses were performed, with our results revealing that female-targeting sadistic and non-sadistic sexual offenders differ in numerous ways, notably in their developmental, psychological, sexological and criminological dimensions. The theoretical and clinical implications of these findings are discussed.
