La croissance naturelle des Montréalais au XIXe siècle NET REPRODUCTION IN THREE CULTURAL COMMUNITIES IN 19TH-CENTURY MONTREAL

RÉSUMÉ

Un échantillon patronymique est stratifié pour faciliter la comparaison des comportements démographiques de trois communautés culturelles : canadienne-française, anglo-protestante et irlando-catholique. Malgré leur voisinage étroit à l'intérieur d'une même ville, les trois communautés n'avaient pas le même calendrier de mariage. Les tables de mortalité créées pour les années 1860 et 1890 révèlent une importante réduction de l'intensité du mariage et en montrent l'impact sur les taux nets de reproduction. Dans chaque communauté, l'évolution de la distribution des âges au mariage semble offrir un premier signe d'une « transition démographique ».

ABSTRACT

To compare three cultural communities in the same city—French Canadian, Irish Catholic and Anglo-Protestant—we drew samples by surname for family reconstitution over the course of the 19th century. From that miniaturized running model of the urban population, we extracted two panels and constructed life tables, one for the 1860s, the other for the 1890s. The three groups display distinctive timetables for marriage, as well as sizeable differences in infant and child mortality. From one generation to the next, we observe an important reduction in marriage intensity in the three communities, with a strong impact on the relative rates of net reproduction. In our interpretation, the evolution of the marriage timetables suggests, in advance of any significant change in marital fertility, the onset of a “demographic transition”.
