Abstract
Pulau Dewata is the only work by Claude Vivier whose orchestration is entirely free. Composed in 1977, after returning home from travels devoted in large part to the study of Balinese music, the work has been the object of a significant number of highly varied adaptations which range from strict instrumental assignment of the original musical material to elaborate orchestrations. In order to understand why some of these “arrangements” are considered “derangements” by others, this article compares the different orchestrations, using examples principally from the versions by John Rea and Walter Boudreau. This comparison of approaches is preceded by an analysis of the form and the guiding principles behind the composition of Pulau Dewata, which makes use of the composer’s sketches conserved at the Université de Montréal’s Vivier archive.
