Abstract
In this article, the authors analyze the depiction of queer family building in lesbian- and gay-themed French films. Specifically, their analysis focuses on Vincent Garenq’s Comme les autres (2008), a pre-mariage pour tous production that attempts to address the challenges of gay adoption in France. Building from queer anti-normative literature and feminist perspectives of surrogacy, the authors discuss the extent to which Comme les autres, characterized by its focus on an emerging cinematic trope of the “homo normal,” as well as its alignment with (hetero)normative institutions, such as child rearing, the gender binary and “white queer patriarchy,” supports a homonormative politics that privileges the (re)production of the figural child.
