Abstract
The starting point for this study is an imbalance that gradually disrupts the conventional relationship between sound and image in a segment of the film Boy Meets Girl (Leos Carax, 1984). In order to investigate how a spatial structure emerges and is transformed, the author first observes the relationship between point of view and "point of listening," and then examines the evolving relationship of the characters' and the spectators' bodies to the sound. While spatial coherence is usually constructed through the synchronization of listening and viewing, here a progressive deconstruction of filmic space results from the distancing of ear from eye. The thrust of the filmic writing moves the spatial structure away from the order of the readable, towards the realm of the audible.
