Terre, territoire, territorialité : les agriculteurs et leur attachement au territoire

Résumé

C'est en voulant comprendre les stratégies d'adaptation de l'agriculture familiale aux diverses conjonctures socio-économiques dans le cadre d'une étude comparative internationale qu'est apparu le paradoxe de l'agriculteur québécois fortement attaché à sa terre et à son coin de pays au moment même où l'abondance des terres disponibles devrait le rendre candidat au déménagement vers les meilleurs terres, hypothèse qui sourit d'ailleurs aux agriculteurs des autres pays de l'enquête. Cette observation sert de point de départ au présent article qui se veut autant une réflexion théorique sur le concept de territorialité, une dimension symbolique essentielle de la condition humaine, qu'une analyse sommaire des composantes du rapport au territoire pour une catégorie sociale, les producteurs agricoles, où la terre fait partie de la quotidienneté de vie et de travail; d'ailleurs, l'étymologie commune de terre, territoire et territorialité n'est pas sans révéler comment l'identité individuelle et sociale passait par la médiation de la terre autrefois et par celle du territoire aujourd'hui.

Abstract

Studying adaptative strategies of the family farm in the various socio-economic conditions by an international survey, the unique and paradoxical situation of farmers from Québec comes to the light. On one side, they express a big sense of belonging to their land; on the other side, they have an easy access to the land and they are free to move for a better land if they wish. But, contrary to all other farmers, they do not want to move even to resettle on a better land. This observation is the starting point of this paper trying to settle down the concept of territoriality, a symbolic dimension of the condition of mankind. Using data from two surveys on farmers from Québec, the paper tries to understand how works this sense of belonging to the land and to the local community in the case of this special social group as it had a regular link with the land. The paper points out the fact that the similar etymology of the French words "terre", "territoire" and "territorialite" may reveal the mediation of the land, the social construction of the territory that plays the same function of creating and sustaining identity.
