L’Ontario français comme région : un regard non assimilationniste sur une minorité, son espace et ses réseaux

Résumé

L'urbanisation a fait éclater l'Ontario français en un ensemble de lieux discontinus. La région n'en aurait pas pour autant perdu sa cohérence à la faveur de la consolidation des réseaux qui unissent les lieux de la francophonie ontarienne aux échelles locale et provinciale. Un regard sur la façon dont la communauté franco-ontarienne s'est adaptée aux changements récents de son espace vécu et a utilisé son haut degré de structuration politique pour continuer de voir dans les lieux qu'elle occupe une source d'identité et une base pour son développement futur met en lumière son dynamisme actuel et permet d'élargir le débat quant à son avenir.

Abstract

As a result of urbanization the geography of francophones in Ontario has become more fragmented. Regional cohesion of French-speaking Ontario has remained strong however, with the reinforcement of close links between francophones disseminated in the province through active networks at the local and provincial level. This study deals with the adaptation of the Franco-Ontarian community to a new organization of its lived space and with its reliance on its political institutions in order to maintain a strong regional French identity. Such a perspective will help to grasp the issue of development of French-speaking Ontario and will broaden the discussion of its overall future.
