L’évolution récente de l’industrie manufacturière à Montréal

Résumé

L'industrie manufacturière a très peu progressé dans l'agglomération montréalaise au cours des dix dernières années et elle est durement affectée par la crise économique actuelle, les secteurs « mous » subissant de lourdes pertes d'emplois. Si la fabrication du matériel de transport enregistre une bonne performance, plusieurs secteurs-clés comme la sidérurgie, la pétrochimie, l'électronique et l'industrie pharmaceutique paraissent cependant fragiles. Sur le plan spatial, l'affaiblissement de la ville centrale s'est poursuivi au profit des banlieues. Cette relocalisation de l'industrie, tout en profitant aux municipalités qui ont su développer une infrastructure d'accueil, vient confirmer les orientations fonctionnelles locales. Pour mettre fin à une désindustrialisation coûteuse, la ville de Montréal a donc mis sur pied, à partir de 1979, un vigoureux programme de relance de son secteur manufacturier.

Abstract

The manufacturing industry in the Montréal region has not much developed over the past ten years and is severely affected by the present economic crisis. A great number of jobs have been lost in the slow sectors. Despite efficiency in transportation equipment manufacturing, many key activities such as steel industry, petrochemistry, electronics and the pharmaceutical industry seem to be in a precarious situation. From a spatial point of view, the weakening of industry in the central city and its net migration to the suburbs continue to profit those locations which have developed their infrastructures during the preceding period.

This tendency has confirmed local functional specializations. In order to prevent a further and costly decline, the City of Montréal has been developing since 1979 a comprehensive revitalization program in the manufacturing industry.
