Morphogénèse du milieu construit du centre-ville de Shawinigan

Résumé

L'étude traite principalement de la morphogénèse du milieu construit du centre-ville de Shawinigan, pour la période de 1900-1930. Les premières étapes de la recherche, portant sur les formes unicellulaires et les regroupements morphologiques, apparaissent sous forme de tableau. La démonstration s'appuie prioritairement sur la distinction des places respectives que tiennent, dans la compréhension du phénomène urbain, la logique de la forme marchandise et la théorie de la forme urbaine. Ainsi, nous retrouvons une compagnie, d'une part, exploitant une richesse naturelle — l'hydro-électricité — et qui s'associe étroitement à la grande industrie pour l'exploitation d'une force de travail, et, d'autre part, s'appropriant une portion d'espace qu'elle entend mettre en valeur... en créant une ville.

Abstract

The study deals essentially with the morphogenesis of the constructed environment in downtown Shawinigan, for the period 1900-1930. The initial elements of the research, concerning « unicellular forms » and morphological groupings, are presented in table form. The demonstration relies primarily on the distinction between the logic of the « merchant form » and the theory of the urban form, which both contribute to the understanding of the urban phenomenon. Thus we find a company, on the one hand taking advantage of a national resource — hydroelectricity — and closely associating itself with big industry in order to exploit the labour force and, on the other hand appropriating a portion of space that it intends to put to use... by creating a town.
