We would like to thank our collaborator, Mr. Mario Myre, for allowing us to publish the excellent survey he presented to the members of the Canadian Bar Association on June 7, 1983. In his survey, Mr. Myre sheds some light on reinsurance, a subject which is generally quite misunderstood. Reinsurance, sometimes referred to as the insurance, is a field which, like any other, has its own jargon and characteristics. We hope you, the reader, insurer or even reinsurer, will find the following pages most interesting.

Elles ont passé d’une très grande laxité à une sévérité assez grande pour bouleverser pendant un temps la participation dans les bénéfices des assurés participants. Puis, le ministère des Finances a adouci ses exigences ou, tout au moins, il les a modifiées de façon assez sensible. C’est l’histoire de cette évolution, qui remonte à quelques années, que relate cet article que nous extrayons de Study Notes of the Society of Actuaries, avec l’autorisation de la Société.

There exists a mutual interest between the broker and the insured which becomes evident when an insurance risk is placed or at the time a loss occurs. To illustrate this relationship, the author presents a number of cases in which services rendered by the broker to the client were highly appreciable. Insureds should indeed perceive insurance not as a merchandise bought at the lowest price tendered, but rather as a service the value of which one realizes when confronted with a loss.

Au dernier Rendez-Vous de Septembre, à Monte-Carlo, M. Vincent Redier, président et directeur général du groupe Le Blanc et de Nicolay, a répondu aux questions que lui posait un représentant de L’Argus, journal international des assurances (31 août 1984), au sujet du rôle du courtier dans le marché de la réassurance. C’est avec plaisir qu’avec l’autorisation de la revue et de l’interviewé, nous reproduisons les questions posées par le journaliste et les réponses de M. Redier, à titre de président et directeur général de son groupe. Celui-ci nous paraît avoir bien présenté le personnage du courtier de réassurance. Comme lui, nous pensons qu’il se conforme aux usages et tendances, plus qu’il ne les oriente.

1984 has been a difficult year for Canada but one cannot blame Canadian policy makers since the Canadian economy was unusually influenced by outside events. ln particular, the high level of interest rates in the United States and the strength of the U.S. dollar in foreign exchange markets imposed a major deflationary discipline on the Canadian economy. Nevertheless, Mr. Landry finds some positive development particularly with respect to inflation.
