Abstract
This research note examines the sensory experiences of young Mozambicans as they negotiate the relationship between building and living. Such experiences are not only interesting in themselves, but also for what they reveal about the relationship between the material world, subjectivities and the socio-historical context. In this research project, I use cement as a lens to examine the socio-economic transformations underway in a continent contentiously described as rising and the implications of such discourses on the everyday life of Mozambicans. Inspired by the growing body of anthropologists who have attempted to conceive the relationships between humans and objects in terms of relational ontologies, I focus here on the mutual relationship between the house and the individual. As sensory anthropology teaches us, cultural norms and values are also forged through dwelling, and paying attention to sensory experiences therefore helps highlight what we value. While building and dwelling are often conceived as fundamentally political activities, a focus on the relationship between materiality, temporality and sensoriality adds texture and complexity to the aspirations that underpin them.
