Quand les membres d'une société du Tiers-Monde consomment des objets/signes en provenance de l'Occident, ils empruntent ipso facto les idées et perceptions qui sont responsables initialement de la production de tels objets. La consommation de ces objets est donc aussi la consommation de signes/idées associés au capitalisme industriel. Les sociétés du Tiers-Monde peuvent-elles résister à une telle pénétration idéologique? Ont-elles les moyens de neutraliser ces systèmes d'idées qui s'étendent des vêtements jusqu'aux modes de communication en passant par l'habitat et les systèmes de santé ? Le résultat doit-il être nécessairement l'assujettissement consommatoire et la recolonisation? Cet article tente d'offrir des éléments de réponse à ces questions au moyen d'une analyse des comportements consommatoires en milieu rural et urbain au Vanuatu, analyse qui met l'accent sur les rapports entre formes de consommation, construction identitaire et reproduction idéologique.

Abstract

Erakor or the Slow Consumption ofan Imaginan- Collective Capital

When the members of Third World societies consume objects/signs of Western provenance, they are compelled to absorb the ideas and intentions which figure in the production of thèse objects as well. The Consumption of these objects/signs is therefore équivalent to the consumption of signs and ideas associated with industrial capitalism. Can the societies of the Third World resist such ideological pénétration ? Do they possess the means to neutralize the Systems of ideas that imbue everything from clothing to télécommunications, including housing and health care Systems ? Must the end resuit be one of subjugation to consumerism and recolonization ? In this paper, an analysis of consumer behaviour in rural and urban Vanuatu is offered which attempts to grapple with these questions by focusing on the relations between forms of Consumption, identity construction, and ideological reproduction.
