SUMMARY
Consanguineous Mating in Québec : Risks to Progeny
The article discusses the effects of consanguineous mating on recessive and co-dominant genes as high lighted in genetic epidemiologic studies in the province of Québec. The consequences of first-cousin marriage and incestuous unions on cultural development and sociomedical innovation in Québec are also outlined. Family history emerges as a far better indicator of risk for the offspring of consanguineous unions, unless their family histories have already otherwise been identified as risk-positive. The presumable causes of high frequency for certain genes in highly endogamous populations, as in the Saguenay-Lac St-Jean region, are also presented.
