Abstract
The ancient Greek theatre is internationally famous and has a vast influence and impact, whereas the modern one is almost absent from histories of the theatre. This paper is about the presence of Modern Greek Theatre abroad. It is based on research performed in the English-speaking world, bibliographies of translations and a specific theatrological project performed by the Department of Theatre Studies of the University of Athens, which included both translations and performances. The presence of modern Greek playwrights is commented on and analyzed from different aspects : time, place, language and globally. The causes of its rather restricted impact are examined through theories of reception, and its realistic possibilities are assessed.
