Abstract
Despite numerous studies showing the economic precariousness of women with disabilities or reporting on the various forms of violence they are likely to face in their lives, the experiences of these women are rarely made visible in the field of homelessness, and even less so when it comes to documenting the complex links between this social problem and intimate partners violence. This paper presents findings from 17 life story interviews with women with disabilities who have experienced homelessness and intimate partner violence. It reveals 1) the lack of adapted resources for women with disabilities to overcome the violence they have suffered is combined with de systemic barriers they encounter to produce precariousness and homelessness, and 2) the precariousness and homelessness of women with disabilities is an important factor in maintaining or returning to a violent intimate relationship. The complex intertwining of disability, homelessness, and intimate partner violence in the life courses of these women illustrates how patriarchal and ableist interpersonal and structural violence work together to keep these women in the private sphere and limit their opportunities for social participation, keeping them in a poor social class.
