La profondeur de champ peut être définie comme la zone de tolérance où l’oeil ne peut pas faire la différence entre le flou et le net. Autrement dit, elle n’est autre qu’un espace flou qui est vu net. La mise au point, qui a une fonction essentielle au cinéma, est donc tout autant un enjeu de perception que de technologies de prise de vues. Dans le cadre de cette publication, les conséquences théoriques et pratiques d’un tel constat seront explorées tant du point de vue des chercheurs que de celui des praticiens. Les enjeux liés aux conditions de la prise de vues seront étudiés en relation avec la mesure de la profondeur de champ et les aspects esthétiques associés à ces variables techniques et perceptives.

Depth of field can be defined as the zone of tolerance in which the eye cannot distinguish between sharpness and blurriness. In other words, it is nothing other than a blurry space which is seen as being sharp. Focusing, which has an essential function in cinema, is thus just as much a matter of perception as it is of image recording technology. The theoretical and practical consequences of this fact will be explored here from both a scholarly and a practical point of view. Questions around filming conditions will be examined in relation to measuring depth of field and the aesthetic aspects associated with these technical and perceptive variables.
